High up in the Graubünden Alps, where the air is thin and the scenery is spectacular, Europe's highest temporary circuit comes alive once a year. Since 2011, Lenzerheide Motor Classics has drawn car enthusiasts to this Swiss mountain resort for a weekend that feels more like a village festival than a traditional motorsport event.
Around 250 vehicles take part, spanning a century of automotive history. The field is deliberately diverse: pre-war racing cars share the programme with GT legends, touring car heroes, open-wheel formula machines, historic motorcycles and sidecars. Categories range from "Kampf der Zwerge" (Battle of the Dwarfs) featuring small-displacement racers to full-on Formula 1 machinery from the 1980s. This isn't about outright speed – drivers run demonstration heats in groups, putting on a show for spectators while enjoying the unique mountain circuit.
What makes Lenzerheide special is its intimacy. The paddock is completely open, letting you walk right up to the cars and chat with drivers and mechanics. You'll find yourself standing next to a Mercedes-Benz SSK one moment and watching a synchronized drifting display the next. The sound of engines echoes off the surrounding peaks, mixing with cowbells from nearby pastures.
