Vienna Classic Days

Event

For more than thirty-five years, Vienna has hosted a rolling automobile museum through its imperial streets. The Vienna Classic Days transforms the city into a backdrop for roughly 200 classic vehicles, placing pre-war rarities, post-war icons, and youngtimers directly into the urban fabric – past the State Opera, along the Ringstrasse, through Heldenplatz and Michaelerplatz, with Habsburg architecture providing a setting no purpose-built venue could replicate.

The weekend centres on Saturday's Oldtimer Parade, when the Ringstrasse closes to modern traffic and opens to a procession of automotive history. Spectators line the boulevards as vehicles circle the old town, drivers waving from open-topped roadsters and passengers in period attire adding to the theatrical atmosphere. The route typically passes the Parliament, Rathaus, Burgtheater, and Opera House – a tour through Vienna's greatest hits with the bonus of mechanical soundtrack replacing the usual traffic hum. You don't need a ticket to watch; simply find a spot along the Ring and wait for history to roll past.

Sunday morning brings a more intimate gathering at Rathausplatz, where participating vehicles are displayed for closer inspection before departing for the traditional Oldtimer Picnic at the Donaupark near the Donauturm. The programme also includes scenic drives through the Vienna suburbs and along the legendary Höhenstraße, the hillside road through the Vienna Woods that served as a racing circuit in the 1950s.

Participation is open to vehicles built up to 2001, with a fee structure that rewards older machinery – a car from 1900 enters free, while something from 1897 actually receives payment for appearing. The democratic approach means the field ranges from brass-era veterans to 1990s youngtimers, united by enthusiastic ownership rather than concours perfection.

Vienna's central location makes it easily accessible from across Central Europe. The event is free for spectators throughout.
